Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns as the Vice President of India to prioritize his health. Find out about his tenure, resignation details, and what happens next for India’s leadership.

Vice President

Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Vice President of India, shocked everyone by resigning on Monday for health reasons. The 74-year-old, who took office in August 2022, wrote to President Droupadi Murmu that he needed to “prioritize health care and follow medical advice” in his resignation letter. Dhankhar is immediately stepping down due to his recent health issues, which included a visit to AIIMS-Delhi for heart problems in March 2025.

Resignation and health issues: a step toward getting better

Dhankhar thanked the leaders of India, the Parliament, and the people of India for their support throughout his time in office in a letter to the President. Article 67(a) of the Constitution of India says that the resignation was legal. He said, “I am resigning as Vice President of India, effective immediately, to put health care first and follow medical advice.”

Dhankhar made the choice to stand down after having health problems that put him in the hospital for four days this year because of heart problems. Even though he had to deal with these problems, Dhankhar stayed dedicated to his job until he thought it was best for his health to take a break.

A History of Service

During Dhankhar’s time as vice president, there have been important events in Indian politics. He was the governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022 before becoming vice president. During his time in government, Dhankhar earned a lot of respect for his intelligence and contributions to India’s advancement. This was especially true because he saw the country’s economic growth and progress during an unparalleled time.

He said he was proud of the part he played in India’s growth, saying, “It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period.” His resignation letter also showed how thankful he was. He said that being in government was an “honor” and that he was “filled with pride” in Bharat’s emergence on the world stage and amazing accomplishments.

What comes next?

The vice president’s job is still open after Dhankhar stepped down. The Constitution says that this vacancy must be filled by an election within 60 days. The new vice president will be chosen by members of both houses of Parliament using a single transferable vote, which is a proportional representation system. For now, Harivansh Narayan Singh, the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, will be the Acting Chairperson of the Upper House.

Thank You and Goodbye Words

Dhankhar expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his Council of Ministers, and the Members of Parliament. He thanked Prime Minister Modi for his help and collaboration, calling it important. He also talked about the trust and love he had received from parliamentarians during his time in office. “I will always remember and cherish the warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament,” he declared.

Finally, Dhankhar said that he was sure about India’s future, saying, “I have full faith in her bright future.”

A New Era in India’s Leadership

Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation ends an important chapter in India’s political history, but his impact will live on and inspire future leaders. As India advances, the country will choose a new vice president who will continue to represent the people and lead the country toward more progress.
