UPI (Unified Payments Interface), India’s most trusted digital payment platform, is getting even better. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has made five important changes that will take effect on August 1, 2025. These changes will make the system more reliable, efficient, and safe for users. These restrictions will directly affect your daily online transactions, whether you use them a lot or run a business.

Let’s get into the five new UPI regulations that you really need to know.

1. You can only check your balance 50 times a day for each app.
There are no more times when you have to replenish your equilibrium without thinking. According to the new rules:

  • Every UPI app can only check a user’s balance 50 times a day.
  • There are limits on automatic or background balance refreshes.

Why it matters: This change is meant to help the system run better during busy times, including during sales and on paydays.

Observe the frequency of your balance checks and consider setting up alerts in your bank app as an alternative.

2. The Account Listing API now is limited to 25 calls per day.
The “List Account” feature, which gets your linked bank accounts, now is restricted to 25 requests per user per app each day.

Why it matters: The change cuts down on too many backend calls that slow down UPI processing and makes things easier for everyone.
Action Step: To stay within limits, don’t switch between several UPI-linked accounts more than you need to.

3. UPI AutoPay Requirements Get a better retry system
Payments that happen on a regular basis, including OTT subscriptions, SIPs, and energy bills, are affected:

  • After a failure, AutoPay can only try three more times.
  • All regulations will only happen during off-peak hours, which are frequently late at night or early in the morning.

Why it matters: This update stops payment stack crashes and makes sure that your monthly bills go through without you having to do anything.

Tip: Make sure your account has enough money in it when scheduled deductions are due to avoid problems.

4. The name of the payee will be clearly shown before the transaction.

One of the easiest to utilize upgrades:

  • Even if you only input the receiver’s UPI ID or mobile number, their full name will be revealed before you finalize the transfer.

Why it’s important: It cuts down on fraud and mistaken identity transfers, and it helps people double-check before sending money.

Safety Tip: Always check that the name matches the person or business you want to pay.

5. The new UPI fee only applies to aggregators, not users.
The NPCI has changed the way it charges fees, but here’s the good news:

  • Users and businesses don’t have to pay anything.
  • Payment processors (like PhonePe, Google Pay, and others) will pay the banks the transaction charge.

Why it’s important: It maintains the financial health of the UPI ecosystem and ensures that the user experience remains completely free.

You need not take any action; continue conducting your business as usual.

Why These UPI Rules Are a Good Idea

These adjustments to the rules are part of UPI’s growth and maturity as it handles billions of transactions every month, which helps India move toward a digital economy.
